Sometimes it’s difficult to find ways of keeping kids entertained over the school holidays or even at weekends. Here’s our pick of ideas for family day trips that will keep everyone happy.

Macduff Marine Aquarium

Children will find the tanks of fish and marine life at MacDuff Marine Aquarium fascinating, and there are always activities and competitions on the go. The tanks house species which can be found in Scottish waters, so you won’t find Nemo or many of his tropical cousins. The fish feeding is always interesting and the staff are friendly and knowledgeable. Little ones will enjoy the pool where you can touch star fish and crabs.

Dundee Science Centre

Dundee Science Centre is designed to encourage youngsters to explore the world around them, converting curiosity into a life-long passion for science. Between now and 7th June, mini-palaeontologists can enjoy sessions uncovering a replica dinosaur skeleton from the sand, or getting to grips with an array of artefacts in the Fossils & Funny Bones interactive exhibition. It’s best for younger children as teenagers will whip round the exhibits quite quickly.

Battle Grounds

Head out to Battle Grounds near Banchory for an adrenalin-fuelled day which will let argumentative siblings let off steam and bring out Daddy’s competitive side. You can get kitted out for LaserTag, or Paintballing, both of which are popular options for birthday parties as well as regular visits. The games are well run by the
marshals who are great at keeping control and making sure the game doesn’t degenerate into a re-enactment of Lord of the Flies. You’ll all come home exhausted, happy and – if you’ve opted for paintball – probably with an impressive set of bruises.
