If your kids are anything like mine, sometimes getting out of the house is the best option. The chilly months ahead need not dampen your spirits, we’ve rounded up the best family friendly activities so you can plan in advance.
The Enchanted Forest
Head to Pitlochry for this main stay spectacular, which has been delighting both old and young alike for the last 25 years. The event takes place from the 8th of October to the 8th of November, and we warn you that tickets sell out fast. Faskally Woods is set to be transformed with this year’s magical anniversary theme – Stop the Clock: The 25th Hour. You can expect to be transported into a dreamlike world, where clocks misbehave and reality unravels. Children under three go free, and there are also autism friendly sessions. Winter, Wonder, Wander
This popular event is returning for its fourth year at the Winter Gardens within Duthie Park. The initiative is organised by Friends of Duthie Park and sees the botanic gardens transformed into a winter grotto. A family ticket comes in at £25 and all money raised is ploughed back into the park. You can expect to see the tropical greenhouses illuminated against the night sky, complete with special light projections, lanterns and glowing pops up nestled amongst the plants. It will take place from November 3rd -November 10th , and sells out in advance. Tickets are available via TicketSource.
Christmas at the Castle.
Yes, we really did just mention the C word. The festivities seem to start earlier every year, if you can’t beat them, well you know how the saying goes! There are two big events held at Crathes Castle which will be sure to get you in the spirit. Crathes Christmas Craft Fair takes place between the 13th and the 15th of November, where you can stock up on beautiful gifts thanks to around 60 exhibitors. Entry for children is free, and it’s a great opportunity to get them involved in gift choosing for loved ones whilst supporting local businesses. Christmas at the Castle will kick off in December where you can explore a festive light trail and even book in for a chat with Santa. The Polar Express
Organised by Caledonian Railway, The Polar Express will take you on a magical train ride where passengers will receive the first gift of Christmas – a sleigh bell. Dancing chefs and waiters will serve
cookies and hot chocolate, before the classic tale of The Polar Express unfolds. Santa himself may come aboard to a rousing chorus of carols, and passengers are encouraged to wear pyjamas just like in the book. Whilst the one off experience doesn’t come cheap, the memories will last forever.
