Six weeks is a long, and potentially very expensive, time to keep small humans amused. The days of just sending kids outside with a bicycle and some sweets at the start of July and only seeing them when they got hungry or it was time to shop for new school shoes are long gone. In fact, most kids aren’t allowed to go anywhere by themselves or with friends until they are in their teenage years. Roaming free may be a thing of the past, but that doesn’t mean that there aren’t tons of interesting activities and adventures available this summer…
Get the holidays off with a bang. The Ministry of Science Show (also at the Tivoli, 24 July) offers a high-octane blend of explosions, experiments, and educational fun. In a similar vein, the hands-on exhibits at the Aberdeen Science Centre keep all ages engaged. Keep the theme going with a visit to the Art Gallery, where Macduff Marine Aquarium will be bringing touch pools and hosting talks about creatures from the deep, followed by a cheap day out at one of the region’s many beaches, where rock pools will take on a whole new fascination.
If encouraging your children to run away to join the circus appeals – as it may well do before the new terms kicks off – Circus Vegas will pitch up in Aberdeen from 25 July to 12 August, while Zippo’s Circus brings its brand of thrills to both Peterhead and Stonehaven this summer.
One of the best bargains is on offer at Aberdeen Sports Village. Their Holiday Camps run weekly from 7 July to mid-August, offering a variety of sporty fun — from swimming to gymnastics — to burn off that boundless energy. You can even add in a package where lunch is provided.
Embrace the simple joys of summer with free or low-cost activities, try baking, Gardening, DIY, or craft sessions at home. Hobbycraft is good for kits and online classes. Explore the city’s parks and playgrounds. Don’t miss Duthie Park’s talking cactus, have a play on the swings or pack a picnic for Hazlehead Park’s woods and animal corner. Don’t miss the Tall Ships at the harbour from 19–22 July. Marvel at these magnificent vessels, take part in shore side activities, and soak up a festival atmosphere that’s truly special.
Likewise, don’t miss Aberdeen Mela One World Day — a joyful celebration of global culture, community and music, with some pretty good food trucks.
Younger children will adore the Teddy Bears’ Picnic at Banff Castle (6 August), or a visit to The Gonks of Gardenshillock Summer Storybook Trail. All in all, this could be a summer to remember.
