e talked to Kirsty Robertson and Steven Milne of Aberdeen Performing Arts, to discover more about the Lemon Tree’s innovative course for young musicians…

The Project Band course helps teenagers with an interest in music learn more about working in the music industry. Course tutor Steven Milne, who plays with the Little Kicks, explained, ‘ We cover song writing and composition, rehearsal and preparation for live performance, instrument and vocal care and studio preparation as well as doing some recording work. We also discuss live bookings and how to market and promote yourself as a musician. We also discuss how to balance a career in music alongside studies
or employment’.

Kirsty Robertson added, ‘Local bands and singer-songwriters often lead workshops discussing their own writing and musical approaches. There are plenty of opportunities to perform in the sessions either in small groups or solo, but no one is ever required to perform until they are absolutely comfortable. Sessions run on Wednesday evenings from 7pm to 9pm and the course ends with a showcase performance’.

Steven continued, ‘The current class includes young people interested in pop, heavy metal and prog rock and everyone really enjoys the course, especially since we adapt it to suit their requirements. Some of last year’s intake are now playing successful gigs and getting their music heard and some are now studying music at college or university’.

The course is open to those aged between 14 and 19. The next term starts on 19th April, but it’s best to book in advance as places are quickly snapped up. Booking opens on 20 March, via the Box Office and fees are £65 per term. For further details, please e-mail creativelearning@aberdeenperformingarts.com
