Ever since it opened back in 1938, William Strachan has been a favourite with Inverurie’s shoppers. The traditional newsagent has evolved into a wonderful one stop shop for toys, luxury gifts, cards and gift wrapping that draws visitors from across the North-east.
Much of Strachans’ enduring appeal is down to the friendliness of the staff and the family atmosphere of the store. Five members of the Strachan family still work in the business, which is known for its special events and outstanding customer service.
Over the years, Strachans has become one of the biggest independent toy retailers in Scotland, stocking everything from traditional toys, crafts and playsets, to a massive selection of LEGO and games. Christmas Club members can pay a 10% deposit to reserve toys and Strachans will store them until Christmas Eve. Not only does it help Santa spread the cost, but it also keeps the presents safe from inquisitive little explorers!
Strachans offers plenty for adults too, so you can bag the perfect gift for everyone on your list without the usual hassle that normally comes with Christmas shopping. The gift department is constantly changing, with stock from around 15 new companies added each season so there’s always something new. You’ll find perennial favourites like Yankee Candle, LSA Glass, and design-led Scandinavian jewellery from Sno and Dansk Smykkekunst. There’s a fabulous collection of beautiful scarves, wraps and capes and some great woolly pom-pom hats. A visit to the card and wrapping section provides the finishing touches.
Round off your trip with a visit to the deli counter for a Caber Coffee, or one of Strachan’s tasty soups, sandwiches, wraps and paninis or treat yourself to ice cream from Simpsons of Buckie or a delicious homemade tray bake. Yum!
