Fifi’s Café Bistro on Rosemount Place has just become the city’s first gluten free café. While this is a huge boon for those with coeliac disease or IBS, it’s also great news for everyone who would like their food to be a wee bit healthier, while still being a delicious treat.

‘I know from personal experience that removing gluten, which is an inflammatory ingredient, from my own family’s diet has led to a dramatic improvement in their health and I wanted to share that with my customers’, owner Fiona Kozak explained.

After a considerable amount of research, ingredients testing and sampling, owner Fiona Kozak with her friend and local holistic chiropractor Dr Eline Pedersen have put together a menu that not only tastes good, but is also good for you.

Fifi’s fresh juice blends make a perfect start to the day, packed with vitamins, fruit and vegetables. There’s an all-day breakfast menu, ranging from the traditional fry up to porridge, pancakes and eggs Florentine – but all gluten free.

If you think gluten free means waving goodbye to sandwiches and toasties, you’d be wrong, as Fiona has created an imaginative selection. The fillings are more creative than many cafés – the smoked Applewood cheese with spiced apple jelly is lovely. All the ingredients are locally sourced and of excellent quality. The omelettes use free range eggs and the salads are well balanced. Even the ice cream and fabulous cakes, scones and tray bakes are all gluten free.

As a mum of four, Fiona has made Fifi’s very family friendly, with the children’s menu featuring funky shaped sandwiches, toasties and Heinz Tomato Soup. Fifi’s is a relaxed, friendly place. In the evenings, an informal bistro style takes over, with booking advisable.
