Ninety-nine Bar & Kitchen

There is no denying that plant-based eating is becoming more and more popular, even if only for one or two meals a week. So it is exciting to see restaurants like Ninety-Nine Bar & Kitchen on Back Wynd introduce a menu that includes classic pub favourites, all magically created using plant-based foods only. Thanks to an in-house partnership with Roots Catering, their vegan menu is now available seven days a week.

We went along for a late Sunday lunch and I must confess that the menu caused me to do a double-take, they have truly recreated a traditional pub menu. There were so many intriguing options, we decided to order a few different things and share.  We started with a mountainous platter of nachos, smothered in a cheesy sauce and laden with guacamole and pico de gallo. The burger section was not to be ignored, so we opted to share a Roots Bloody Roots burger, which is a miso roasted root vegetable burger with salsa and a smoked sweetcorn sauce. I am a fan of vegan burgers, and I must say this was one of the most unique I have tasted – my only regret was that it meant I missed the opportunity to try the Chickn’ & Waffles, which were a big hit at the table next to us.  For sides, we went for rosemary and truffle fries, which were amazing, and a helping of pickled gherkins, because who can resist that? Unfortunately, we did not spare room for dessert, so we will have to try the caramelised apple eton mess and an Oreo milkshake the next time we are in.

For anyone doubting that vegan fare can be decadent, a lunch at Ninety-Nine Bar & Kitchen might just change their mind.
