Take a hike

We all know that walking is one of the best ways of staying active and healthy, but around 70% of us are wearing the wrong shoe size. Our feet are constantly measured as children, but almost never as adults. Finding the right footwear is especially important when it comes to walking shoes, hiking boots and running shoes.

Shoes which don’t fit properly or which don’t adapt to our individual foot structure, weight distribution and gait can lead to everything from blisters and bunions to plantar fasciitis and heel pain. Visiting a local specialist can avoid an expensive and painful mistake.

Just like designer heels, some brands are more comfortable than others. Many of the Italian brands, like Scarpa, are great for narrow feet, whereas Keen and Merrell both offer a wider fit. Look for a lighter weight and technical fabrics which offer waterproofing and breathability, combined with decent padding and a comfortable fit. Don’t opt for a bigger size that leaves your feet sliding around unless you’re keen to sprain your ankle.

Our feet swell during the day, so buying in the afternoon can mean a better fit.

When you’re trying boots on, wear the same type of socks you’d wear when walking and check for areas that feel tight, or seams that put pressure on your feet. Look for good arch support as this will make walking a pleasure.

Look for durable boots that will last for years. Leather boots are often stiff and need a bit of breaking in before they are comfortable, but old boots can
feel like wearing slippers. Some companies even offer a resoling service, meaning a lifetime

of wear. You want soles that combine durability and grip, particularly when Scottish hills tend to scree and bogginess.

Some specialists can also supply orthotic insoles that mould to the feet and compensate for structural issues, like pronation and supination, where the weight is placed disproportionally on the inside or outside of the foot respectively, as we walk.

It can be worth trying on both women’s and men’s boots to find the most comfortable fit. Take your time, walk around and don’t rush the buying decision.
