From the moment you step through the orange doors at Dargie Design’s new showroom in the heart of the city, you know you’re not in an ordinary furniture shop. The John Street shop, located just round the corner from John Lewis, has a very boutique feel, with an emphasis on personal service, and a stunning selection of contemporary pieces that combine great design, comfort, practicality, longevity and quality. Rough-hewn cedar plank walls and quirky astroturf flooring set off a carefully curated selection of sofas, dining furniture, bedroom fittings, cabinetry and occasional pieces. There’s also an expanded range of finishing touches including stunning statement lighting, gorgeous vases, clocks, mirrors and even Dargie’s own range of beautifully scented candles and diffusers – perfect if you’re just looking to update or refresh your interiors.
Instead of the furniture superstore approach with acres of bland, lumpen design and commission-hungry staff, Dargie offers a combination of classic modern furniture from some of the leading European design houses including Hūlsta, Ligne Roset, Kartell and Leolux. Dargie is the exclusive Scottish stockist for many of the designs, which are otherwise only available in top London retailers. There are even some kitsch outdoor gnome tables from design maverick Philippe Starck.
Upstairs, there’s a panoramic lounge, with a seating area where the store offer free help with space planning and room layouts. This is particularly valuable if you’re building your own home, or planning a major refurbishment.
A visit to Dargie Design is a much more immersive, yet relaxed experience than traditional furniture shopping. There’s a genuinely warm and friendly atmosphere and you can browse and try things out without feeling pressured. It’s quite usual to make several visits before making your choice, because there are so many great pieces to choose from. Even the opening hours reflect Dargie Design’s relaxed approach. The shop is open every day except Wednesday, but hours run from 10ish to 5ish, except Sundays, where they open from 1ish to 4ish. That said, Dargie Design is so welcoming that it’s not unusual to find customers still browsing at 6.30pm.
