Valentine’s Day means it’s time to pucker up. Here’s our pick of the best new lip balms and colour for that perfect pout…

This Spring, there are two major, and majorly contradictory, trends in lipwear. The first is a dramatic, heavily layered, hi-gloss look, sometimes with a metallic or glitter accent, that should be reserved for nights out or early 1980s album covers. The other is, thankfully, rather easier to pull off for day to day wear. Catwalks abounded with a softly worn in, slightly smudged look in naturally pink or peachy shades or lightly applied reds with minimal makeup elsewhere.

Try Dior Addict’s Lip Glow in Natural Pink at £25 or Perricone MD’s excellent No Lipstick Lipstick, which layers to give a natural rosy hue. The neuropeptides, jojoba oil and mango butter are great for keeping lips soft while the mineral SPF15 adds extra protection. Add a dab of Perricone MD’s anti-ageing lipgloss for a fuller look.

For a more purse-friendly approach, Boots stock Sleek MakeUp, also available at sleekmakeup.com, which offers 26 shades in their LIP VIP range, each priced at £5.50. Private Booth and Backstage are both natural pinks, while Fancy Pants is an appealing peachy shade. Walk of Fame is a dark red which works with most complexions, while Hype is a medium lilac which tones well with this season’s ultra violet fashion shades, if you can pull it off.

Even a lip balm can help you achieve a more finished look in a couple of seconds. Hempz is great for vegans and vegetarians as the hemp seed oil is gently moisturising and softening, providing hydration, nourishment and conditioning to lips. The tube is great for handbags and the sweet citrus flavour is really nice.

If your lips are in need of intensive care, try O’Keefe’s. They’re known for their industrial strength hand repair products, but they also do a couple of amazing lip balms that will soon lick cracked or chapped lips into shape. These work equally well for men as they’re not tinted or infused with a femininely fruity flavour.

Time to pucker up! Mwah!
