As we impatiently watch the sunset getting gradually later, and scrape the windscreen for the umpteenth time – our minds naturally turn to thoughts of a sunny break.

Where could we go this summer from Aberdeen? Somewhere the sun will shine and crystal blue waters beckon invitingly, with delicious food and…

Daydream no longer, flights to the Dodecanese island of Rhodes start this May from Aberdeen. Rhodes is a large Greek island, south-east of Greece and facing Turkey with wall-to-wall sunshine, beaches galore and a fascinating medieval past.

Wander the cobbled streets of Rhodes Old Town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site once home to the Knights of St. John who ruled for 200 years and built 30 castles throughout the island; or head to lovely Lindos and climb the steps to the Acropolis and pano views of the archipelago. Both Rhodes Old Town and Lindos are car-free as are many of the outlying islands, perfect for winding down and really relaxing.

There really is a beach for everyone on Rhodes, from family-friendly Agathi and Tsampika to wind and kite-surfers’ paradise Prasonisi on the southern tip of the island. This is the spot where the Aegean and Mediterranean seas meet, creating perfect surfing weather. If you want to avoid the tan-lines, there’s a dedicated nude beach at Faliraki, and it would be hard to beat St. Paul in Lindos for a sunset with
your sundowner.

Families are well catered for, with the highly-rated Water Park at Faliraki and Aquarium in Rhodes Town, as well as endless beach fun and friendly hotels. If you’re visiting from June to August, take a day trip to Petaloúdes to see hundreds of Jersey Tiger Moths in the nature reserve there, as well as lots of walks past ponds and streams with views of waterfalls.

Rhodes has many neighbouring islands near enough for a day trip: Symi is just a couple of hours away by daily ferry and an hour will get you to tiny Halki, the smallest inhabited island in the chain. Both are still traditional fishing villages with colourful houses and tavernas serving local food including fish caught that day. There is plenty of accommodation too if you fancy an overnight stay.

Fly every Wednesday from Aberdeen to Rhodes starting 1 May – 18 September 2019 with TUI.
