It might be the sight of crocuses, irises and daffodils poking through the soil; it might be the sun in a powder blue sky, but there’s something about spring that makes us want to break out the sugary colours. The spring’s catwalk palette combines pastels, intense primary colours and metallic accents.

Candy clad separates, eveningwear and swimwear hit the stores every spring, but head to toe pinks, yellows or minty greens can easily look sickly rather than sweet. Give it a modern edge by introducing a colour pop in light knits, accessories and shoes. Metallic touches help to offset beautiful pastels and jewels, and toughen up girly hues. Take your catwalk cues from Chanel and Moschino by wearing a colourful item and combining it with a metallic accent, following the retro look.

Work wear can still be sophisticated with a hint of sweetie pie: try a brightly coloured coat, a tailored pastel number with a blazer, or a bright blouse with your everyday trousers. Although these colours are overtly feminine, use the garment silhouettes to tell a different story: boxy blouses and collarless jackets help balance an androgynous and feminine feel.

If you are fond of the dark side in your fashion tastes, try a primary colour instead of a pastel: the contrast is still as bright against black and it’s a trend that will last through till autumn. If you really can’t be parted from black, invest in a sugary coloured handbag or heels to add a subtle splash of colour to your wardrobe this season, that is sweet as candy.
